The mission of Greyhound Pets of America/ South Alabama is to find good permanent homes for former racing Greyhounds. In order to accomplish this mission GPA/SAL has placed education, of the general public, concerning the pet potential of the retired racing Greyhound as a top priority. GPA/SAL is an Alabama 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, further, as a sub-chapter of Greyhound Pets of America; it exists as a tax-exempt corporation. GPA/SAL is staffed entirely by unpaid volunteers; all donations and other revenues are dedicated to supporting our Greyhound adoption program. GPA/SAL takes no position regarding the issues surrounding Greyhound racing, but rather leaves it to its volunteers and adopters to reach their own informed conclusions. However, GPA/SAL believes that there is great value in working with members of the Greyhound racing community in obtaining former racers for placement in pet homes and, in the process, learning as much as possible about the history of each Greyhound so that the optimum home can be found for it. GPA/SAL currently houses its Greyhounds, awaiting adoption, in foster homes where the dogs can be transitioned from track and kennel life to pet home life. The foster homes keep records and monitor each Greyhound so as to assist in the proper placement according to both the Greyhound’s needs and the adoptive family’s needs. GPA/SAL welcomes volunteers from all walks of life, regardless of whether they have adopted a Greyhound, or whether they have adopted a Greyhound through another agency. All that is required is a love for the breed, the willingness to learn about it and a desire to work for the welfare of the Greyhound. GPA/SAL members have discovered that having fun and doing fulfilling work in the service of Greyhound adoption are not mutually exclusive. |
