Adoption Information For more Information on Adoption, please call our Adoption Coordinator, Nikki Ortiz at 241-404-8414. Interested in adopting a Retired Racing Greyhound? Here’s some question to ask yourself: 1. Is everyone in your household committed to taking the necessary time and having the patience to make a greyhound part of the family? 2. If you have small children, do you understand that it is necessary to “child proof” your dog, supervise them, and teach your kids proper dog etiquette? 3. Examine your current housing situation. If renting, does your property owner allow dogs and are there any limits? If you move to another rental, what will happen to the dog if the new property owner does not allow dogs over 50 lbs.? 4. Will you take your dog out at 2 a.m. if he/she asks to go out? 5. Greyhounds are inside pets. Do you plan to keep your dog inside? 6. Have you reviewed your household budget to make sure that you can afford the costs of caring for your Greyhound? Costs include food, pet supplies, veterinary bills, grooming, and pet sitters. 7. Do you acknowledge that adopting a Greyhound can be an 8-10 year commitment? 8. If you don’t have a fenced yard, are you willing to walk your dog rain or shine, and even when sick? Will you provide a safe, enclosed area where he/she can occasionally gallop? 9. Are you willing to deal with strong instincts to chase other living creatures that run? Fearfulness and timidity when not socialized enough? An independent and aloof attitude toward training? Emotional sensitivity to stress and abrupt changes in schedule? 10. Do you understand that there could be an “adjustment period” lasting a few days to several weeks when adopting, depending on the dog? Your Greyhound may still be learning how to live inside a house, but with a little patience and understanding most of these dogs adapt very quickly to the lavish life as a household pet.
GPA/SAL’s Adoption Process GPA/SAL does not perform “on-the-spot” adoptions. Our adoption process, consisting of a written application, informal interview, and home visit, yields a higher percentage of successful adoptions, and most importantly, of quality homes for the dogs. Additionally, we provide a very strong support network for all adopters for the life of their ex-racer. Many adopters contact us for a second or third Greyhound, a term we refer to as “chipping.” We require all prospective adopting families to read Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies by Lee Livingood and, if you have children, Child-Proofing Your Dog by Brian Kilcommons and Sarah Wilson. Both are offered in our Greyt Goods at a discount. We conduct a thorough application review and home visit. Then we endeavor to match your family and lifestyle with one of our available Greyhounds. We do want you to be involved in selecting your dog. Because of this optimal placement philosophy, your expectations should not be that all of the retired racers listed on our site will be a good fit for your family dynamic. The Cost There is a $25.00 non-refundable application fee, and a $150.00 adoption fee for a total of $175.00. For this cost, you are adopting a spayed/ neutered Greyhound current on all vaccinations. They have been tested for Heartworms, and GPA/SAL has maintained treatment for parasites, external and internal. Upon retiring and entering into foster care with GPA/SAL, the Greyhound has a full vet check up, including a dental cleaning. You will also receive a nylon martingale collar and lead in your choice of color, a GPA I.D. tag to remain on your Greyhound at all times, a complete information packet, and a lifetime of support from GPA/SAL. The Adoption Application Download and print our Adoption Application. Send it in with you application fee or bring it to us at our next event and meet the dogs!
